Transcending Madness: The Bardos and the Experience of the Six Realms

With Clarke WarrenJan Wilcox, and Michael Chender.

Presenting a nine-week course of listening to and discussing Trungpa Rinpoche’s ground-breaking 1971 seminar on the six realms of being that we all regularly cycle through, and the bardos—the intermediate states or “no man’s land,” which present the opportunities in both life and death to awaken to basic sanity.

“… it is present experience, the immediate experience of nowness-where you are, where you’re at. That is the basic idea of bardo.” (Transcending Madness, pg. 3)

Rinpoche demonstrates how, through the perspective coming from meditation, one can wake up amidst the extreme experiences of everyday life and transform states of our normalized madness into wakefulness and insight. Having done that, one can effectively help others caught in extreme states of mind.

The class will offer the opportunity to hear the tapes of the seminar and will follow along with the talks in the published edition of the seminar in Transcending Madness: The Experience of the Six Bardos, Shambhala Publications.

Hosted by Michael Chender, Jan Wilcox, and Clarke Warren, who have, as a team of long-term teachers with very different styles, taught several Ocean classes on the vital Vajrayana teachings and works of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche over the last few years.

Participants can order the book from Shambhala Publications at a 30% discount. You can listen to the original recordings of Trungpa Rinpoche's bardo teachings on the Chronicles.
